What do inspectors actually check at outdoor dining permit renewal?

Mine's coming up for the first time and the rules look different from when I first applied. Want to know what to fix before they show up.

Renewed mine in SF last quarter. The three to nail: ADA clearance, structural sign-off, insurance. Don't skip the structural drawings. Here's what I submitted: dimensioned site plan showing the 4-ft accessible path, stamped engineering drawings for the awning and side walls, certificate of insurance with $1M general liability naming the city as additional insured, a maintenance and snow-clearance plan, and a lease addendum signed by my landlord. Photos of the current setup from four angles. DPW flagged my first submission because the pinch-point between the parklet and the curb was 42 inches at one spot. I had to relocate one planter. Total turnaround was about 5 weeks once the package was complete.

SF minimum wage increases to $19.61 on July 1. Operators are already asking what to do

12 operators discussing

Have deep restaurant industry experience? Newer operators are already looking for you.

“Elder” is a term of respect. It describes members whose years in the restaurant business give them wisdom worth sharing with our community.

We want to know how you found the right menu mix. How you handled your last lease renewal. What you negotiated with your POS vendor.

As a Mainstep Elder, you take 30-minute 1:1 calls with newer operators. Set your own rate, or do it for free.

How Mainstep works

Is it really free?

Yes, always free for operators. No tiers, no upsells, no catch.

How am I anonymous?

You post under a username. Your name and business never appear on the platform.

Who else is on the platform?

Only verified operators. We confirm every signup against the state business registry before letting them in.

What's the difference between a Member and an Elder?

Everyone asks and answers. Elders (seasoned veterans) can also take 1:1 calls with newer operators. They set their own rate, or do it for free.

What's the time commitment?

Post when you've got a question or something to share. For Elders: you set your own availability for advisory calls.

What happens with my data?

We aggregate it and send it back to you as benchmarks: “32% of SF restaurants use Square.” Your data never leaves Mainstep.
